20 years ago today I played CBGB's in a band called BLACK EYED PEAS, no relation to the Will.i.am-Fergie band of the same name. We were around from 1991-1994. Fishbone, Bad Brains and Brand New Heavies were our biggest influences. We played Greensboro, NC the night before and drove through the night to New York, 7 of us in 3 small cars. One car died on the New Jersey Turnpike so we made it to CBGB just in time crammed into 2 cars. We played second of six bands. The sound was amazing and the bathrooms were horrible. We played 2 more shows in NYC that weekend before returning to North Carolina. It was one of the best road trips I have ever taken and there are too many details to write down so here are some keywords from the trip: flat tire, speeding ticket, 60 ounce Olde English, a night at Webster Hall that included vip treatment and a fight, Poughkeepsie, John Gotti, Staten Island, the godson of the head of Warner Brothers, and wearing the same clothes for 5 days straight.
